Cold or Seasonal Allergies? Barcelona Is Still Blooming

Barcelona in early summer is one of the most beautiful times of the year. Tree-lined streets, blooming parks, long sunny days, and the pleasant Mediterranean climate invite both locals and visitors to enjoy walks and outdoor cafés.

For many people, however, this season also has a less pleasant side. If you’ve recently found yourself reaching for tissues more often, sneezing repeatedly, or dealing with itchy eyes, the cause may not be a common cold. Although spring is coming to an end, Barcelona’s pollen season is far from over. Thanks to the Mediterranean climate, several important allergens remain present well into early summer.

Did you know that early summer is one of the periods when some of the Mediterranean’s most significant pollens are found in the air? If you’ve been experiencing sneezing, a runny nose, or itchy eyes lately, you may not have caught a cold, it could simply be part of Barcelona’s natural early summer.

Why Does Allergy Season Last So Long in Barcelona?

One of the main reasons is the Mediterranean climate itself. Mild winters and a long growing season allow many different plant species to bloom throughout much of the year. While some pollens peak during spring, others reach high concentrations in June and early summer.

Barcelona is famous for its tree-lined streets, urban parks, and Mediterranean vegetation. This rich diversity of greenery contributes to the city’s unique charm but also to its extended pollen season.

What's Blooming in Barcelona Right Now?

Several plants are particularly important allergens at this time of year.

Grasses

Grass pollen is one of the most common causes of seasonal allergic rhinitis across Europe, and early summer marks its peak season. Even people who experienced no symptoms during spring may start noticing typical allergy symptoms now.

Pellitory (Parietaria)

Few people have heard of it, but throughout the Mediterranean region, pellitory is a major allergen. This member of the nettle family often grows on old walls, rocky surfaces, and in urban environments. Its pollen can remain present for long periods and may cause significant symptoms in sensitive individuals.

Olive Trees

Olive trees are an iconic part of the Mediterranean landscape. Their pollen can travel long distances on the wind and is one of the important allergens in Catalonia.

Plane Trees and Other Trees

Plane trees are one of Barcelona’s most recognisable symbols, and their pollen is a significant spring allergen. Although their main season is gradually ending, pollen from other tree species may still be present in the air.

What About Those Purple-Flowering Trees? If you’ve noticed streets filled with beautiful purple blossoms in recent weeks, you’ve probably been admiring jacaranda trees. They are among the most striking symbols of Barcelona’s late spring and early summer. Despite their spectacular flowers, they are not considered major sources of pollen allergies.

And what about linden trees? They also bloom beautifully at this time of year, filling the streets with their distinctive fragrance. The good news is that linden pollen is generally not considered a major cause of seasonal allergies.

Did You Know?

Barcelona is famous for its wide boulevards and tree-lined streets. The city is home to more than 200,000 street trees, which help cool the urban environment during the hot summer months, improve air quality, and create a more pleasant place to live.

For decades, plane trees have been among Barcelona’s most characteristic urban trees and remain an important part of the city’s landscape. In recent years, however, the city has gradually introduced a more diverse range of species. The goal is to increase the resilience of urban greenery to climate change, support biodiversity, and create a healthier urban environment for future generations.

This rich urban vegetation is one of the reasons Barcelona is such an enjoyable place to live. However, some tree and plant species naturally release pollen throughout the year, which can trigger allergy symptoms in susceptible individuals.

Is Pollen the Only Problem?

Pollen is undoubtedly the main trigger of seasonal allergies, but it is not the only factor influencing symptom severity.

Surprisingly, some allergy sufferers may experience stronger symptoms in cities than the amount of greenery alone would suggest. One reason is the interaction between pollen and the urban environment. Scientific studies indicate that air pollution can irritate the lining of the respiratory tract and influence how the immune system responds to pollen.

As a result, allergy symptoms may sometimes be more severe in urban areas than expected. The intensity of allergy season depends on a combination of vegetation, weather conditions, air quality, and each individual’s sensitivity—and Barcelona is no exception.

Is It an Allergy or a Cold?

The symptoms can be similar, but there are several differences.

Symptoms that are more suggestive of allergies include:

  • repeated sneezing,
  • a watery runny nose,
  • itchy and watery eyes,
  • itching of the nose or roof of the mouth.

Fever, muscle aches, and a significant sore throat, on the other hand, are more typical of viral infections.

If your symptoms return around the same time every year, seasonal allergies may be the likely cause.

How Can You Reduce Allergy Symptoms?

Although it’s impossible to avoid pollen completely, a few simple measures may help reduce its effects.

✔ Check local pollen forecasts.
✔ Wash your face and hair and change your clothes after spending time outdoors.
✔ Keep windows closed during periods of high pollen counts whenever possible.
✔ Wear sunglasses to help protect your eyes from pollen.
✔ Dry laundry indoors to prevent pollen from collecting on fabrics.
✔ Seek medical advice if your symptoms persist or become more severe.

When Should You See a Doctor?

Seasonal allergies are usually not dangerous, but they can significantly affect your quality of life.

Medical evaluation is recommended if:

  • symptoms last for several weeks,
  • over-the-counter medications do not provide sufficient relief,
  • wheezing or shortness of breath develops,
  • allergies interfere with sleep or everyday activities.

A proper diagnosis can help identify the most suitable treatment and greatly improve daily life.
