Among the most outstanding of the Hospital Clínic Group achievements, special mention has to be made of the results in the field of transplants. The Transplant Services Foundation, which has been successfully operating for over twenty years, was created by the centre to assist in the development of the transplant system, with its main criteria being excellence in quality and legality. One of the foremost of the group's transplant programmes is the liver transplant programme. It is run by President of the International Liver Transplantation Society and Chief of the barnaclínic+ General, Gastrointestinal and Hepatobiliopancreatic Surgery and Transplantation Department, Dr Juan Carlos Garcia-Valdecasas. Under the direction of Dr Garcia-Valdecasas, there have been over 1,500 organ transplants from living, cadaveric and beating-heart donors and domino transplants, with the highest survival rates and the lowest number of complications. Some of the transplants performed by this unit have represented significant medical breakthroughs, attracting world renown and making the team a pioneer in its field.

Another area of excellence is the Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT) Programme with a regular activity of 90 transplants per year, more than half of which are allogeneic and many highly complex. The hospital specialises in complex cases such as autologous transplant in autoimmune diseases or plasma cell dyscrasias, unrelated-donor allogeneic transplant and allogeneic transplantation in rare diseases. As a result of the high degree of specialisation in haematological diseases treated at the centre, as it is a leading institution both nationally and internationally. Lines of transplant have been under development for patients with diseases which cannot be cured by other means who, until recently, were not usually offered transplant as a therapeutic option.

Also important to mention is the use of the latest techniques in minimally invasive surgery for kidney transplantation. The first kidney removal (affected by cancer) through the vagina was performed in barnaclínic+ under the direction of Dr Antonio Alcaraz using the NOTES technique, a milestone in minimally invasive surgery. Since then, Dr Alcaraz's team has performed about 100 single-port nephrectomies, 30 of these living donors, and another 100 transvaginal nephrectomies (NOTES), of which 70 were living donors. Last year, of the 60 living-donor kidney transplants, 25 extractions were transumbilical or transvaginal, and this year they expect similar figures. The NOTES technique enables a short postoperative period and less pain, in addition to minimising the cosmetic impact, as it leaves no visible abdominal scars.

The presence also of distinguished professionals like Dr Josep Maria Campistol, an expert in kidney transplants, amyloidosis and chronic renal failure, and Director of the Instituto Clínico de Nefrología i Urología [Clínic Institute of Nephrology and Urology], makes barnaclínic+ one of the most renowned transplant centres, every year treating patients from all over the world.

The barnaclínic+ Cardiology Platform is a leader in the development of innovations in cardiology and cardiovascular surgery. Its distinguished medical team includes the world-renowned expert in the area of cardiac arrhythmias and sudden death, Doctor Josep Brugada, and the authority on interventional cardiology, Dr Manuel Sabaté.

Member of the executive board of directors and scientific chair of the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, scientific reviewer for the European Commission and coordinator of three European projects on foetal medicine, he is also a member of the pioneering group of foetal surgery in Europe, Eurofoetus, and participated in the design of some of the foetal treatments used today.  Dr Gratacós has 15 years' experience in his field and has performed more than 1,500 in utero foetal surgery interventions, many of them the first in the world.
